30-Day Blogging Challenge: Day 3 of 30

Social Media is one of the most effective and powerful yet tricky online marketing technique. It gives you the power to share your content across a lot of channels, directly engage with your customers and gather feedback almost immediately.

It gets tricky though with all the social media sites you have to manage with their endless changes and industry updates.

There are no right or wrong way of doing social media, what works for you might not work for others and vice versa. But there are industry best practices that you can follow and test until you figure out which strategy works for your audience or your clients.

I remember a line from Spice Girls (don’t judge! lol)

“Too much of something is bad enough…. Too much of nothing is just as tough….”

As important it is to read about the latest updates, too much information can overwhelm one’s mind. I suggest sticking to just 3-5 regular resources but do always be in the look out for the latest news.


The key is in knowing where to get your updates. It can be a bit overwhelming to follow all the sites and read all their updates. You don’t have to do it everyday. Here are some of the online resources for Social Media Marketing that I follow and refer to for updates and ideas to improve my strategy plus some tips on how to stay current with each of the websites:

1. Social Media Examiner
“The world’s largest online social media magazine, Social Media Examiner® helps businesses discover how to best use social media, blogs and podcasts to connect with customers, drive traffic, generate awareness and increase sales.”

Tip: Subscribe to their blog. They will send you a neat overview of the updates in their blog and from the titles you can already decide if you want to click the link and read it today or just save it for some other time. Social Media Examiner is my number 1 go to resource for all things social media.

2. Mashable
“Mashable is a leading source for news, information & resources for the Connected Generation. Mashable reports on the importance of digital innovation and how it empowers and inspires people around the world. Mashable’s 34 million monthly unique visitors and 14 million social media followers have become one of the most engaged digital networks in the world.”

Tip: Follow their Facebook Page. They have a very active Facebook page and their updates are pretty interesting stories which you can share to your network too.

3. Mari Smith
“Mari Smith is one of the world’s leading social media strategists and widely recognized as the #1 Facebook marketing expert in the world. She is author of The New Relationship Marketing and coauthor of Facebook Marketing: An Hour A Day.”

Tip: Subscribe to The Social Scoop, where they sort through social media blog posts, updates, articles, etc and picks just 3 to send to you each week. That saves you tons of time!

4. Hubspot’s Inbound Hub
“HubSpot all-in-one marketing software helps more than 10,000 companies in 56 countries attract leads and convert them into customers. A pioneer in inbound marketing, HubSpot aims to help its customers make marketing that people actually love.”

Tip: Highly recommended resource for Digital Marketers. Subscribe to their site to get free updates, useful marketing templates, free stock photos, and many more. Their library of resources can truly help you from creating a marketing plan to planning your content marketing to templates to use for your services.

5. Google
“Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Tip: There is no place like home, or in this case, Google. Chances are, you get to see the headline of an update in Facebook, Twitter, or an Email Newsletter. If you’re interested to find out more about a specific topic or update, GOOGLE IT!
